An Introduction to London for foreign language students.

Each episode is between 15 and 30 minutes long and contains a number of entertaining historical stories, fun facts, and a light hearted lesson based on a variety of subjects, for example:  idioms, phrasal verbs and pronunciation.   

At the end of most episodes, I endeavour to make a typical English sandwich in my kitchen, hence the title.  There are also 2 special episodes from New York!

An Introduction

In the first episode, I introduce myself, my city and the objective of these films.

We visit a variety of famous London landmarks before discovering why I have called this series of films, “Gary’s London Sandwich!”

Time & Parliament

In the second episode we are going to explore TIME with the most famous clock in the world! 

We also take a look at Parliament and discover how the UK government works.   After some fun facts, we discover some common time idioms plus there is another sandwich of the day!

Royalty

In the third episode, we are going to focus our attention on Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the Royal Family and Buckingham Palace. 

I will also introduce you to royal phrases which are commonly used in English conversation and naturally I will make another popular English sandwich.

In the fourth episode, we explore iconic London.  When you think of London, you think of the red double-decker bus, the black taxi and the London underground.  So let’s take a look at these traditional modes of transport in the capital.  We also take a look at the red telephone box. and learn a few phrasal verbs connected with the phone.  We conclude with another simple sandwich.

New york city (pt1)

In the first of a two part special, we leave London and travel to New York City for Thanksgiving with my American family. 

This episode features many famous landmarks and districts including:  Broadway, Times Square, 42nd Street, 5th Avenue, Macys and Central Park.  

With help from my family, we explore the differences between English and American English words.

In the second part of this special, we continue our exploration of New York City and Thanksgiving with my American family.

This episode features more of NYC’s  famous landmarks and districts including:  Chinatown, the 9/11 memorials, The Freedom Tower, Wall Street & Battery Park.

With help from my family, we continue our exploration of the differences between English and American English words.

Christmas in london

In the seventh episode we tell the story of a typical British Christmas:  from the Christmas lights and activities in Covent Garden, the West End and Trafalgar Square to the traditional food served over the holiday period. 

Friends and family gather to wish you all a Merry Christmas and we return to the kitchen for a sandwich made of Christmas leftovers!

English literature

In the eighth and  final episode of the series, we explore English literature and in particular, the lives and times of three English writers:  William Shakespeare, Charles Dickens and Dr Samuel Johnson. 

We discover where they lived and worked, as we listen to extracts from their famous works…….and there is one final sandwich!
